A Dialogue between Nature and Culture: COP17 Participants Visit Garni and Lake Sevan
October 26, 2026
As part of the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17), field trips were organized for participants of the “Culture and Nature” conference to historical and cultural sites in Kotayk and Gegharkunik provinces. The visits aimed to showcase Armenia’s cultural heritage and highlight its connections with biodiversity, nature, and environmental conservation.
Participants visited the Geghard Monastery complex, the Temple of Garni, and the Symphony of Stones natural monument. Near the Temple of Garni, the ‘Masunk’ traditional song and dance ensemble performed folk songs and dances reflecting the Armenian people’s cultural ties to the natural world. The program featured “Khnki Tsar” (Frankincense Tree), “Tsoren em Tsane” (I Sow Wheat), and the “Tsar Pnjelu” dance-song, as well as traditional dances inspired by animal worship and imitation, including “Krnkaven,” “Ghaz-Ghazi,” and “Zaqeni,” among others. An exhibition and fair was also organized with the participation of the Hovhannes Sharambeyan Museum of Folk Arts, the Teryan Cultural Centre, local producers, and artisans.
The participants then visited the Norashen Reserve in ‘Sevan’ National Park, where they learned about the biological significance of Lake Sevan and the area’s rich biodiversity. At the Sevan Botanical Garden, guests were introduced to plant species growing in the area and adapted to local conditions, including species listed in Armenia’s Red Book.
At the exhibition area in the city of Sevan, participants had the opportunity to explore the work and products of local artists and creators. The ‘Development and Preservation of Armenian Culinary Traditions’ NGO presented Armenia’s culinary heritage through a live demonstration of a traditional dish. The program continued at the Sevan Cultural Centre with a screening of the documentary ‘People of the Lake: Sevan’s Fishermen’.
Produced by the ‘Sevan Youth Club’ NGO with the support of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of the Republic of Armenia, the film explores Sevan’s fishing culture, fishermen’s memories, and their connection with the lake. The screening was followed by a discussion with the film’s protagonists, Sevan’s fishermen, and concluded with a concert by the ‘GAMMA’ Band.
The day’s cultural program continued at the ‘Bohem’ art studio and tea house, where participants tasted “Sevan Tea,” made from local plant species, and took part in a creative workshop.
